Alsace Wine Study Questions (Note: I will gladly add you to the WSET Level 3 Quizlet class, email me.)
The Wines:
We started by tasting 4 Reislings side by side. The prices ranged from $4 to $43. The German Riesling from Aldis, one from Washington a Riesling from Alsace, and a Spatlese from Germany. Below are my tasting notes.
We decided to save the Pinot Blanc and
Auxerrois for another time.

With 27g/l of residual sugar, sweetness rolls around the palate but it is lifted by a refreshing spritz, zesty lemons and tropical fruits.
Yakima Valley enjoys long sunny days and brisk evenings. This stunning Riesling offers everything you'd expect from a great Mosel expression of the same grape. Deliciously medium dry, this is a real treat.

Peach, apple, melon and a smokey mineral/earth quality. Medium bodied and perhaps a little above there with more density and concentration than the G-H from last night (8.5% ABV). Opened at 44F, warming to 50F and showed more complexity and better differentiation between fruit and acidity as it warmed. Peach and apple upfront, with richer, more savory tropical notes through the middle (especially orange, pineapple and mango). These richer notes are background complexity for the moment as the acidity balances them extremely well. Finishes with a kick of acidity and lemony citrus. Good length on the finish with moderate mineral and floral notes along with lingering acidity. Has slightly more complexity and depth than the G-H as well as a different overall flavor profile. Peak is still a few years in the future with many years of life after that. Next bottle in Spring 2019.

Site-typical scents and bursting juiciness of mint-tinged grapefruit, pineapple, and apple inform the Prum 2011 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese A.P. #12, albeit with a bit of a yeasty, cheesy veil that needs to blow off. A delightful inner-mouth floral perfume -- akin to honeysuckle -- along with a slick of honey add decadent richness to the palate. Hints of apple pip piquancy and chew of tart apple skin along with crushed stone accents lend counterpoint to the succulently-sustained finish. It seems that for whatever reason -- the Prums confess to having no clue -- their Graachers are behind their other wines in evolution. Look for "the usual" quarter-century or more of admirable service. (There will be a second bottling.) (4/2013)

A blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, this a low-dosage (6 grams per liter) sparkler that is a no-brainer crowd-pleaser. Super-fresh, lit-up aromas of crisp Bosc pears, tropical lemon-like fruits, dry apples and fresh-made bread dough, it’s super clean, racy and tongue-tingling. OUTSTANDING stuff at our price --- those who bought it last time already know! While it lasts…!
