  • 2016 Nessa Albarino  DO13.5% abv
  • Varietal:
  • Region: Spain, Rias Baixas
Pear and melon aromas are good but basic. Citric acidity is grabbing, while citrus and peach flavors show a hint of green pepper on the backside. On the finish, the fruit character doesn't last long. Drink immediately.
Bright straw-yellow. A lively bouquet displays aromas of fresh citrus and orchard fruits, green tea and dusty minerals, and an herbal nuance builds in the glass. Taut, mineral-driven Meyer lemon and green apple flavors stretch out with air and pick up a refreshingly bitter quinine accent. Closes minerally and long, featuring a subtle floral note and a snap of chalky minerality.

Winemaker Notes

A wine for pure pleasure! Maturing early, it is dry, well-balanced, supple and refreshing. Pinot Blanc is ideal for serving as an aperitif, at formal dinners, receptions or light meals.
Pinot Blanc is best served with shellfish, cold meats, tartes flambées, pies and other light appetizers.
James Suckling
Very dry style with lemon, green apple and steel aromas and flavors. Medium body, tight and crisp. All you need. Drink now.

the nose is peachy with minerals. Good acidity. On the palate, a creamy texture has more body than expected. Chalk, lemon and bits of apple on the attack. The chalk is more like almond milk if that makes sense. Some citrus on the finish. A lot going on here for an under $20 wine. Screaming good deal. I wouldn't try to make old bones out of it, but you never know I guess.

Trimbach elaborates this 2015 Trimbach Pinot Blanc ($14.17), a white wine from Alsace made of auxerrois and pinot blanc of 2015 and has an alcohol content of 12.5%. Uvinum users rate this white wine with 4 out of 5 points.

As a wine, Auxerrois is more full bodied and less crisp than Pinot Blanc, but the two varieties complement each other’s weaknesses. The most traditional of style of this blend are Edelzwicker wines, where Auxerrois often plays a dominant but unstated role.
If yields are restricted, Auxerrois can produce quality wine with plenty of citrus flavors, often with a rich, musky aroma profile. As it ages, it can take on honeyed flavors and will deepen in color. Weaker examples can be quite vegetal and flabby, out of balance and lacking in intensity. Auxerrois is an unforgiving grape in the winery – poor winemaking will result in wines that lack focus and concentration. The wine can be produced dry or off-dry, but Auxerrois does not typically achieve the richness or sweetness of Alsatian Pinot Gris.
Synonyms include: Auxerrois Blanc, Pinot Auxerrois, Auxerrois Blanc de Laquenexy.
Food matches for Auxerrois include:

  • Potato and leek soup
  • Soft-shell crab in broth
  • Pad Thai

2011 Chateau Haut-Surget Lalande-de-Pomerol 13% abv. $29.99 Grand Vin de Bordeaux Appelation Lalande-de-Pomerol Controlle

My Tasting Notes:

Other Information:
Good Bordeaux, balanced, good fruit, drank with pork fajitas, short finish but otherwise a nice wine. A 2011 Bordeaux that is good.
One of the first 2011 Bordeaux that I have tried, good wine, balanced fruit and tannin; medium bodied, acid makes it lively and fun, should improve with some time, good value, drank with pizza at Arturos, will drink again
A chewy right bank Bordeaux wine 🍷 perfect 👌 to pair with our pasta 🍝 dish Definitely pair this with a meal or hard cheeses. Not for casual drinking
A fruit 🍉 bomb of plums, cherries 🍒, chocolate 🍫 and pepper 🌶
Deep garnet in color. Full of lushiness and power. CF, CS, merlot, PV and carminere.
PS. When you finish your pasta have dark chocolate 🍫 for dessert with this WOW

Cassis, rosebuds, melted butter and reminds me of roasted meat and even grilled shrimp, anise, sage and thyme - oh, and dark chocolate flavour. A bit harsh at first because it's still relatively young, but develops into an almost velvety soft and well balanced wine after a few minutes in the glass. Beautiful balance between fruit and secondary aromas.

A wine well representative of its appellation than this 2011 open and complex to the olfaction: black fruits, toast, coffee, animal nuances. A sharp attack opens on a round palate, suave, concentrated, with dense and silky tannins, without aggressiveness.

2015 P.J. Valckenberg Gewurztraminer 10% abv. $14.99 Qualitatswein. Region - Pfalz
My Tasting Notes:

Other Information
Full of juicy fruit typical of a gewurztraminer. off-dry and wonderfully full nose with a light hint of fresh soap like from a bed bath and beyond or boutique store.

Delicate notes of white blossom, lemon and lime on the nose are emboldened on the palate of this gorgeously floral Gewürztraminer. It's off-dry in style, with musky, exotic tones of spice and potpourri that linger sexily through the finish. Briskly balanced acidity and a hint of tea tannins lend tautness in structure.

2015 M. Chapoutier La Ciboise Luberon, 14% abv $15.99.

This is fresh, light, with attractive, peachy fruit and a clean finish. A good basic wine.
La Ciboise is the name of Michel Chapoutier’s grandfather’s home. La Ciboise was the energetic center of Chapoutier family life. Similarly, the La Ciboise wines are intended to be enjoyed with friends and family to celebrate everyday life.

La Ciboise Blanc is grown using organic and sustainable farming practices in Luberon, located in the southeastern region of the Rhône Valley. This region has a continental climate due to its proximity to the Alps. One of Europe’s oldest wine regions dating back to 750 BC, it received official AOC status in 1988 and is known for producing charming value wines. Known as one of the most sun-drenched regions in France, it is frequently visited and cherished by tourists.

The wine is pale with green and yellow tints with aromas of white blossom, lemons and exotic fruits. Good balance between the freshness and roundness with great length.

One of my fellow WSET Certification 3 learners lives in Sicily and works for Tasca d'Almerita, I would like to try a wine from Tasca. Natalia Lodato

German Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) as recommended by WSET Level 3 fellow learners.
I am friends with all of the 6 VDP vintners on the Ahr (some more than others).  If you ever get a chance to try Spätburgunder from Stodden, Nelles, Adeneuer, and Kreuzberg (my four favorites), do!   Because the slopes in the Ahr are quite steep and the river quite small and twisty, there are a lot of microclimates that are much warmer than the surrounding areas.  The terroir is also mainly slate, and this gives many of the wines a distinctive mineralty.  The wines are often very focused and oh-so-decidedly pinot noir.  Many are just lovely on the nose -- showing beautiful floral notes. David Jaeger

Louis Guntrum Pinot Noir, notes of red fruits and some integrated oak, is a really elegant wine. I highly recommend you to try it if you haven't yet! Giulia Persichetti

dry Rieslings from the Mosel (my favorite at the moment is a Trittenheimer Apotheke from Bernhard Eifel) David Jaeger. Dry Riesling from Germany is hard to find in the U.S., though.  It's worth the effort.  Some of my favorite producers, that I know you can find in New York, at least are Clemens Busch (a good friend) and Heymann-Löwenstein from the Mosel and Laible from Baden.

One of the most imposing, classical Chianti properties, just south of Florence, has been meticulously restored by Gerd and Stephan Schue.

Lucignano Chianti in the hills just south of Florence (‘Colli Fiorentini’) has long had a high reputation for it’s generous and juicy black cherry and prune fruits and touch of game or leather, followed of course, by the savoury Sangiovese finish. Well regarded as value for authentic and very well made Chianti.

Softer in tannins than my usual chianti’s but portraying leathery black currant and anise notes albeit with a noticeably absent bite this achieves balance in a strange but meaningful way.
Fresh, chewy, but not lacking depth, solid, and more so at $10.

The vineyards of Volpaia, located between 1.000 and 1.750 feet a.s.l., are between the highest of the Chianti region. This is one of the reasons why our Chianti Classico is renowned for its elegance and freshness with a rich bouquet of red fruits and spices.
Critical Acclaim
WS92Wine Spectator
This juicy red has grip, setting the backdrop for pure cherry, blueberry, earth, iron and tobacco flavors. Though light-weight, this should develop over the next three to five years. Best from 2019 through 2024.
WE92Wine Enthusiast
Smooth and delicious, this opens with inviting scents of raspberry jam, cake spice, violet and a whiff of forest floor. The savory, juicy palate doles out ripe Marasca cherry, truffle and star anise framed in polished tannins. Drink through 2022.

The Chianti Classico has a vivid ruby color and a strong nose of fresh red fruit with hints of cherry. This is a well-structured wine with a fruity finish.

  • colour: Vivid ruby red
  • nose: evident notes of red fruit and hints of cherries
  • taste: smooth and good structured with a fruity aftertaste
Actually drank this the following day, opened it for guests the night before. We like earlier vintages of Volpaia, this did not disappoint. Dark garnet, obviously young. Spicy nose, lots of dark fruit. Definitely Sangiovese, smooth for a young Chianti, though since it was opened the day before, that probably helped. Full bodied palate, plenty of fruit, but good structure. Long finish

This 100% Agiorgitiko wine is deep ruby colored with intense aromas of red fruits marmalade, berry, and cherry, accompanied by sweet spice aromas. In the mouth, the wine presents a velvet-like texture and very good structure. Round and fatty with flavors of chocolate, honey and dry nuts.

acidity and enough integrated tannins. This wine shows a pleasant freshness, concentration, softness and persistence.Good structure but isn't perfect balanced between acidity and sweet sensations, is a bit astringent.Cheers!

The colour is that of very pale yellow gold, brilliant and crystal-clear. The nose develops subtle fruit aromas (peach, pear) or acacia, honeysuckle and bracken, often over notes of fresh almond, hazelnut, cinnamon, butter, and sometimes honey. Exotic fruits are sometimes present, as are citrus notes (orange peel). On the palate, this white wine is dry and well-rounded, mineral (gun-flint) and lively from the first attack. Acidity and fatness come increasingly into play. The structure is harmonious, fresh and round.

The lighter side of medium-bodied, with fresh cut apple and chalk dominating. Lively acids, medium finish, and a pure saline edge adding to the underlying tension. Excellent with our salad course (w/ a modified Champagne Vinaigrette). Fresh and clean, quite enjoyable. At peak now and for the next year or two.

2015 Particular Granacha Arinena 13.5% abv
Varietal: Grenache

Region: Aragon, Spain

Fully ripe black-fruit aromas are rubbery and edgy. This feels jammy, heavy and simple. Flavors of syrupy blackberry and crème de cassis finish sweet and grapy with a sense of syrupy weight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7saYmNPvtA

A fun little Garancha that is much more fruit forward than most. Reminds me of a Cali. blend.
Deep cloudy purple with light ruby rim and long, random legs.
Nose of red fruit, maple pancakes and brioche.
Opening of ripe red fruit favoring cranberry and cherry that's a bit jammy with vanilla, wet leaves, burnt coffee and geranium.
Medium bodied and medium-plus acidity with soft tannins that emerge and fade quickly.
Peace and cheers!

- 2012 M & S Ogier, "Les Combe de Malleval", Condrieu
TASTING NOTES:
Condrieu is made from 100% Viognier and the wine has an ethereal bouquet of perfume and ripe tropical yellow and orange fruits. There is a minerality from the granite rich soil upon which the vines grow. Its texture is grippy and reminiscent of beeswax. As an explosively rich and fragrant wine, Condrieu is in a league of its own!

2014 Nicolas Badel, "Montrond", Saint-Joseph

More from Nicolas Badel

Winemaker Notes

Aromas of appealing red fruits, violet and blackcurrant. After breathing, notes of cherry and eau-de-vie (French brandy) appear. A full and juicy Saint-Joseph precise and smoothed out tannins for a subtle and complex wine.

firm dark red. The nose gives an overt aroma of roast pork, a buffed leather and sweet intensity in it. The palate holds crisp black fruit, has a seared side to it, is a little worked on. The fruit inside the oak is pretty clear. This finishes with a savoury drive, the juice suggesting it comes from mature vines. 13°. 5,700 b. €9.21 export. From spring 2017. 2021-22  Oct 2015

M&S Ogier D'Ampuis Condrieu 2012 13.5% abv
Varietal: Viognier
Region: France, Rhone, Condrieu
Even better is the 2011 Condrieu La Combe de   Malleval. Full-bodied, opulent and rich with unmistakable minerality, it reveals notes of lychee nuts, peaches, honeysuckle and crushed rocks.”
Condrieu's whites, which strike an unusual balance between delicate perfume and substantial body, are produced only in tiny quantities, and only in seven parishes – Limony, Chavanay, Malleval, Saint-Michel-sur-Rhone, Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf, Verin and Condrieu itself – in the nine-mile stretch of the Rhone Valley that makes up the official Condrieu viticultural area.
Confession: I love Condrieu. That's pretty much what I think every time I'm lucky enough to sip this golden-glinting, magical Northern Rhône elixir. The 2012 M&S Ogier d'Ampuis Condrieu didn't disappoint. Gossamer aromas of dewy pears, lemon curd and dried honey make way for a wine that is both rich and incredibly fresh with that oh so lovely waxy lanolin textural note that Viognier from the Condrieu is known for. At the mid-palate, layers of pink grapefruit zest and lemon thyme gently ripple to a close.
93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
More deep and layered, the 2012 Condrieu La Combe de Malleval offers knockout aromas and flavors of tangerine, apricot, white flowers and lychee nut. A classic Condrieu, with beautiful aromatics, plenty of texture and a clean finish, enjoy it over the coming 3-5 years. One of the next generation of winemakers to come up through the ranks by working with his father, the young, yet talented, Stephane Ogier (who is one of the youngest vignerons in the appellation) has been fully in control at this brilliant estate since around 2003. Covering roughly 7 acres in Cote Rotie, there are new plantings just now coming on line, both in Cote Rotie and in the surrounding regions as well. In addition, they are in the process of building a completely new cellar located on the western edge of Ampuis. There’s lots going on here, and if you’re a young wine lover today, count yourself lucky that there are young vignerons of this caliber out there. Looking at the 2011s, these show slightly more linear profiles than the 2012s, yet both vintages possess fantastic purity of fruit and overall elegant profiles.   (12/2013)
92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Light gold. Intensely perfumed pear and peach pit aromas are lifted and sharpened by a bright lemon zest nuance and a dusty mineral note. Silky and seamless, boasting excellent focus to its lively orchard and citrus fruit flavors. Shows very good clarity on the mineral-dominated finish, which features a juicy pear note and a touch of candied anise   (3/2014)
92 points Wine Spectator
Very juicy, with succulent pineapple, peach and apricot fruit flavors melded together while heather and anise details hold the finish. Buried acidity and a faint yet persistent bitter almond hint keeps this poised despite the overt tropical profile.   (10/2014)
Wine & Spirits
This is lush and satin-textured, laden with lime and litchi flavor. The acidity keeps it lifted; the only thing missing is a sense of place. But it’s delicious viognier just the same, especially with Indian-spiced fish.  (2/2015)
2012 Rebula Edi Simiii 13% abv. $44.99
Region: Solvenia, Goriška Brda region
Varietal: Rebula aka Ribolla Gialla (ree bohl lah  Jah lah). is a white Italian wine grape grown most prominently in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeast Italy. The grape is also found in Slovenia where it is known as Rebula.

Tasting Notes:
More Information:
Ribolla Gialla is well-known as high-yielding. Most frequently, it is a basis for simpler, everyday wines. Selective work in 25 to 35-year-old vineyards and a selection of grapes at harvest enable us to show its nobler face. We pay more attention to mineral notes and saltiness offered by the soil of the Goriška Brda region, rather than its aroma profile. Ribolla is the pride of the Goriška Brda.

The nose is matured and youthful at the same time. It offers discrete roasted notes and an aroma of yellow fruit. It has a firm, full mouth feel with a longer aftertaste. It wins us over with distinct acidity, saltiness, and a mineral note, which cleans the mouth. After three or four years and with the development of tertiary aromas, it becomes even more complete and excellent than it was in its youth.

Ageing: Somewhat less new wood (15 to 20%) as with other wines from the Premium Line.

Food: Fish and appetizers which do not carry too intensive aromas. It cleans the mouth very well when a dish is not overly aromatic. It is easy to drink; natural friends with the Goriška Brda salami sausage.

Orange, herbs, dark yellow fruit and some earth on the nose. The medium-bodied palate continues with medium acidity and slightly bitter mineral feeling. Quite a long finish with some more orange and bitterness. There is some sweetness detectable, but not so much that this would still be classified as off-dry. Apart from a disappointingly hollow mid-palate, a well-made, interesting and a bit rustic wine that will work really well with a variety of foods
Famous producer and a tough vintage. This spent 11 months in French Oak. Nice nose of flint, vanilla, pear, and a small amount of fish oil. The caramel and vanilla finish covers the fruit.

2016 Chateaux Gabaron Bordeaux Blanc 12% abv $10.00 from Last Bottle
Region: France: Bordeaux
Varietal: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
So many titillating reasons to buy A LOT of this, as if the sensational price we managed to negotiate was not enough…the fantastic 2016 vintage in Bordeaux, for one (trust us, everyone over in France last week was literally RAVING about 2016s..on the heels of the great 15s...!). Most importantly, of course...this plucky little white is irresistibly easy to drink, especially if you happen to be anywhere near some seafood.  Can you say FRESH? We’re saying it --- this breezes right through your palate with citrus, lemon peel, flowery perfume, the slightest dash of tropicality and a refreshing, zippy salinity (thus our craving for oysters right now) and a clean, pure, no-nonsense, drink-me personality. SO GOOD! SUCH A STEAL! We bought all they’d let us have…!
A lighter and more balanced Kim Crawford. Mellow grapefruit and a crisp, dry finish. Really enjoyable and perfect for hot summer days
"The  bright  crispy  acidity  gives  a  refreshing  first  taste.  Nice  aromas  of citrus, yellow flowers and exotic fruits please the pallet. A long salty and
iodize finish sign the minerality of this wine and his ocean influence."

2015 Paul Mas Estate Picpoul de Pinet 12.5% $14.99
Region: France, Languedoc-Roussillon Picpoul de Pinet region
Varietal: 100% Picpoul, The name Pique-poul translates literally as "stings the lip", and is a reference to the grape's mouthwateringly high acidity.
TASTING NOTES
Bright gold with green tints. Very elegant with white pear and citrus aromas with mineral (flint stone) and herbaceous notes. Balanced with a good acidity, rich middle palate and fruit driven notes on the finish. An excellent companion to seafood and fish dishes, but also with white meats and foie gras, soft cheeses, tarts and fruit desserts. Also very enjoyable alone as a relaxing drink.
Delicate scents of white flowers and fresh herbs frame the core notes of green apple and lime zest. Refreshing and easy drinking, ample acidity lifts the melon pith and citrus peel flavors that flesh out the medium-weight palate, finishing clean yet short.

This wine was recommended by Raulph when looking for a Chateauneaf du Pape for Dianne. Sounds delicious.
